A value which relates linearly to the amount of lignin in a pulp and thus characterizes the bleaching chemical demand.

The Kappa number is the number of millilitres of standardized 0.1 mol/L KMnO4 (permanganate) solution reduced by 1 g of oven-dried pulp under controlled conditions and corrected to consumption of 50% of the permanganate.

L'indice Kappa correspond au nombre de millilitres d'une solution de KMnO4 (permanganate de potassium) 0,1 M consommé par 1 g de pâte (anhydre) dans des conditions contrôlées. Le résultat est corrigé pour une consommation équivalente de permanganate de 50 %.
